Mountain Ridge Ceramics Program
Upon entering my internship at Mountain Ridge High School, I discovered that ceramics had not been taught in a number of years. With staff changes and long term substitutes, no one had taught clay to the students and that aspect of the program needed some attention. A few hundred pounds of clay had dried out, with most of it having not been correct type of clay for the equipment at the school; tools were disorganized and out of place; the storage room and the work areas were not organized to be conducive for a ceramics class. These issues, among others, needed to be addressed before the students began working in clay.
With some assistance from my mentor and the former ceramics teacher at the school, I completed the following tasks to prepare for the lesson:
Attached, I have included some photos of the classroom and storage rooms that show some of the work that I have completed. I also have included some of the reference materials that I developed for the teachers.
The changes I helped put in place show my abilities to establish and maintain organization in the art classroom. With the use of tools, clay, and other equipment, the organization of the physical space is a must. It is essential to create an organized space, especially in an art studio, in order to allow the entire class run more smoothly.
